zokum Posted December 20, 2019 Throughout the years many have criticized the design and look of the Doom 2 citiy maps for being non-sensical, overly abstract and nothing like reality. For about half a year though I have worked at an innovation park that looks like something out of Doom 2. I think the oldest buildings were drawn by architects around the time Doom 2 was released. As a side note, there is a nearby forest with wild bunnies. This is where Daisy lives... I have tried to add some comments about the various locations and what they mean to me. Non-orthogonal walls and red brick textures! You can apporximate curves by loads of straight linedefs. Notice also the stylish Doom 2-esque lamp! Bad texture alignment can be seen in many locations. This is NOT an extension. This looks like a trap. Where is the linedef that opens up this room filled with imps? The choice of material on this stair/elevator shaft is hideous. It looks like it's supposed to be on a roof. Petersenesque? These windows are obviously inspired by a certain set of Doom textures. You can never have too many texture and color schmes, this must be what Map 10 looks like from the outside. The flats align to grid just like in Doom. There is NO location where these tiles align with any of the building, only a small green area outside. Closeup of a Doom 2 style lamp and some more crazy tiling. Map 13 Downtown style architecture. You don't need slopes, just make a ton of small sectors. This architectual trick can also be applied outside! The ground area outside the door is also pretty interesting. There's so much of the architecture in this area. The innovation park alone has 9 separate buildings. A lot of the nearby buildings have similar design schemes. Pictures can't quite do this area justice, there are so many weird building shapes, material choices, boxy designs and weird layouts with underground tunnels. The colors are also a bit off due to the photos being taken with a rather poor cell phone camera. 78 Share this post Link to post
zokum Posted December 20, 2019 In case people want to browse a bit, here's a link to the location in google maps: https://goo.gl/maps/CYVYaE6pHLrVTL3i9 3 Share this post Link to post
Vorpal Posted December 20, 2019 Amazing haha, but really WTF with that masonry "texture misalignment"? 3 Share this post Link to post
zokum Posted December 20, 2019 I think it's in case the building "moves" a bit. To make it break in a controlled location without causing any damage to power, water lines, etc. There are several of these rather weird seams on the buildings in the area. Personally my favourites are the Doom 2 lamps and the KiNg_ReOL style slopes. I work in that building :). 4 Share this post Link to post
Horus Posted December 20, 2019 There’s a texture misalignment in my bathroom. It never bothered me until I started Doom mapping lol 20 Share this post Link to post
cambreaKer Posted December 20, 2019 i remember when i saw a sign and it's texture was too big and it didn't fit 6 Share this post Link to post
HavoX Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Well, I suppose it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that stuff out. But should it? 0 Share this post Link to post
wallabra Posted December 20, 2019 I'm more interested in that Daisy part. :o 0 Share this post Link to post
DSC Posted December 20, 2019 Do people seriously criticize those levels for being abstract? I mean, this is Doom, what were they expecting? And its not like the other levels are less ambiguous too... 7 Share this post Link to post
Mystic 256 Posted December 21, 2019 What about the white rocks on the ground in Downtown? I always assumed they were suppose to be the bones of the people who used to live there before the demons invaded 4 Share this post Link to post

Juza Posted December 22, 2019 This architecture itself is very abstract. Very good pictures 0 Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted December 23, 2019 (edited) Poorly designed city, desperate need of texture alignment, needs more detail, no chance at a cacoward, mapper seroiously needs to learn the basics of Doom Builder, to top it all off it looks like the maps won’t even run in vanilla due to VPOs so who are these screenshots supposed to please??? 2/5 lol 21 Share this post Link to post
xdarkmasterx Posted December 23, 2019 O_O DUDE, what port? This is how it looks when i play it :/ 48 Share this post Link to post

Maximum Matt Posted December 26, 2019 Unaligned fences are the worst. 20 Share this post Link to post
ketmar Posted December 26, 2019 (edited) eh, that's why unexpirienced mappers should avoid slopes! p.s.: also, cmon, that fence texture colors are so washed out! one of the worst wood textures i've seen on any map. p.p.s.: vegetation is good, tho. but i don't even want to think how slow this map renders, with so much grass 3d models! 8 Share this post Link to post
Ashley_Pomeroy Posted December 26, 2019 (edited) Back in 1994 a chap called Jussi Karjalainen made a reasonable copy of Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona pavilion: So I think it's fair to say that the UAC's architects were heavily inspired by modernism. 18 Share this post Link to post

But yeah, I don’t know why it’s on the ground in Downtown. 1 Share this post Link to post
nname Posted January 4, 2020 (edited) I can definitely relate to this, but even though Doom 2 is supposed to take place on earth I can't imagine 'modern' textures or even buildings used in the game. I still feel like the game needs a little bit of that hellish theme, (even if it's not necessarily taking place in hell). Without the grimm look the game wouldn't really fit in with the other Doom games in my opinion. That being said a 'modern' texture pack for Doom 2 would definitely be an interesting thing to look into. 0 Share this post Link to post

Castelia Posted January 5, 2020 (edited) I thought everyone's cities had a giant arrow on the ground pointing to their nearest warehouse. You know, right next to Revenant Tower. In all seriousness, I thought Doom 2's levels looked fine. 6 Share this post Link to post
Guest Unregistered account Posted January 13, 2020 Maybe in the future parking arrows on roads look like that. 0 Share this post Link to post

Castelia Posted January 13, 2020 Now we just need to find a suburb that looks like Suburbs. Complete with nukage pool, a thousand monsters (they just want a dip), and everyone's favourite house full of bodies. 3 Share this post Link to post
