Is it possible to make a timer in vanilla doom?

Is it possible to make a timer where the level ends or the Icon of Sin is killed, when the timer runs out?

A particularly tall crusher. You might need to crush nearby barrel and not icon itself, I'm not sure. Some things don't run "Am I dead" script when crushed.

Hell2Pay has map31 where you are on a bomb complex, and have a set limit of time. If you take too long, the very tall crusher smash some barrels near a voodoo doll, killing you instantly.
So yeah, its a good way to make a time limited map.

With barrels and voodoo dolls you can also stop timer by closing doors. Very convenient.
You can also crush barrels that kill commander keen to open a door.

Any time I try to make a barrel crusher the barel doesn't explode and instead turns into a red goo puddle.

If it's crushed before the death animation can be played, it will turn into gibs.

 

Basically, don't use a fast crusher.
