Recommended Posts

Although this may sound wonky, here goes: Even though Ive watched 35 videos on the topic, I swear I still struggle trying to understand sectors. Anyone know of an ‘Explain it to me like Im a German Shepherd’ tutorial??

To sum up my shared links, sector is the group of connected lines to make game space, where you spend most of your time. For example, if you draw square in builder, you already have sector - space where you can place and add anything you desire. You can expand it or reduce it or draw something inside or next to it for detailing or setting up sort of trap for players. I'd suggest take time to read my shared links, it contains crucial information.

I cannot make up my mind if you are joking or being serious.

If the latter, what exactly is the problem with you understanding sectors.

A sector is just an area where the following are the same throughout:

  • floor/ceiling heights
  • floor/ceiling textures ("flats")
  • light level
  • special effects (damaging floors, pulsing lights, etc)
  • tag (reference handle for linedef actions, such as for doors and platforms)

If you want any of these things to change between different areas, they'll need to be different sectors. For example, each step in a stairway is a different sector, each with a different floor height.

There's other stuff to learn about sectors (such as sound propogation), but this is the basic idea.
