Your going to need more space than that if you are going to run any good Quake mods. If you have the slot and you cannot afford to buy a bigger SDD I would recommend buying a small SD card with at least 16GB of space. My entire Quake mod directory takes up more space than 6GB. 7 hours ago, Wavy said: Quakespasm-Spiked is my go-to. This is my go-to as well, but if that is not your flavor you could try the Mark V engine. Some Quake mappers like DumptruckDS use that one also. If you want some Quake mod and map suggestions I can point you in the right direction too. 2 Share this post Link to post

It has nice QoL features, neat modding tools (viewing names of textures on surfaces and viewing boundry boxes and other entities), and support for DirectX 9. 0 Share this post Link to post

Download CPU-Z, take screenshots of its tabs, post them here. Then we'll have a much better answer. 2 Share this post Link to post

Redneckerz Posted July 23, 2021 40 minutes ago, MattTheGuy said: that might be good but i guess my pc gonna explode Based on what? Your PC does not explode when you install a source port, it usually explodes when its not cleaned out or you lack hard drive space. 40 minutes ago, MattTheGuy said: and i dont wanna run mods so should try winquake? You can run Vanilla Quake just fine with QuakeSpasm-Spiked. All you get is Quality-of-Life improvements. 0 Share this post Link to post
zigg1zagg1 Posted July 24, 2021 Id avoid using winquake or dosbox these days, they both have limited resolution and framerates, and wont play the game's music (unless you have an original CD lying around). The Quake Starter Package is probably the easiest way to get the game setup these days, it comes with Quakespasm-spiked as a source port. And based on those pc specs you should have no issue running the game, even some graphics mods should probably work fine. 0 Share this post Link to post

Murdoch Posted July 26, 2021 (edited) Pretty sure even an old i7 will handle the simpler Quake source ports without a problem so long as the graphics unit is passable decent. Ports are generally more advanced and demanding than the original engine for sure but it's ultimately still 26 year old tech. Don't use Winquake, as others have pointed out that's old and not likely to work well. Just try some of the ports others have suggested. They cannot damage your computer, they just might run like ass. 0 Share this post Link to post
MattTheGuy Posted August 2, 2021 well the only problem is my terrible resolution 0 Share this post Link to post
Boaby Kenobi Posted August 2, 2021 (edited) I am able to run Quake on an old laptop that has a Pentium dual-core and very limited graphical capability. Its runs very smoothly. It's the original version on Steam, not WQ. WinQuake runs poorly. 0 Share this post Link to post

Murdoch Posted August 2, 2021 1 hour ago, MattTheGuy said: well the only problem is my terrible resolution I think you missed my points. It's a 26 year old game. Unless you are running a laptop from the late 90s, its going to run unless it's a super cheap graphics unit and even a cheap laptop's screen resolution is at least comparable height wise to what was around then. And again attempting to run it will do no harm. Download, experiment, see what works. One of the quakespasm variants is your best shot. 0 Share this post Link to post

If even the steam supplied engine runs poorly then the graphics chip must be very bad and unless there's a port designed exclusively for low end systems I've not heard of. What is the actual graphics chip? What other games can you run? 0 Share this post Link to post

Kinsie Posted August 2, 2021 32 minutes ago, Murdoch said: If even the steam supplied engine runs poorly then the graphics chip must be very bad The default Steam launch option runs in DOSbox, which for a game like Quake might be A Bit Of An Ask for the extreme low-end. WinQuake and GLQuake are the original 90s releases, which means they probably have some weirdness on modern Windows. Mark V or Fitzquake may be a better bet. 0 Share this post Link to post
