AnthonyTankHD Posted July 27, 2021 to be honest i never thought doom could improve my reaction time and use quick thinking abilities and i use doom as a sandbox type of way just go around and shoot things i could also use doom as a aim trainer to help my reaction time and learn quick precision skills and i am just curious what do you use doom as i wanna know 5 Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted July 27, 2021 First, full stops are your friend. Second, it's a game. I use it as a game. Might it sharpen your reaction times... I suppose it's possible? I would want to see some studies on that. If I am translating you right, you think Doom might help you aim better with a real gun? 11 Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted July 27, 2021 I use Doom for online deathmatches since it has unmatched speed and never fails to provide me an hour or so of solid fun on any given day. I also use it as a canvas for making levels and as a primary topic for most of my YT videos. 7 Share this post Link to post
Syn Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) I just use it as something to enjoy! 3 Share this post Link to post

Not likely, aim trainer softwares are mainly for training your reaction time to translate to other games. Personally I think aim trainers are useless, the only way to get better at a game is to play THAT GAME, not something that probably runs on a completely different engine. I've also never heard of anyone using Doom as an aim trainer... EDIT: Here is an example of one of these aim trainer things 1 Share this post Link to post
VanaheimRanger Posted July 27, 2021 Oh right...topic. I use doom as an entertainment platform and creative outlet. There, ya go... 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted July 27, 2021 I listen to the iwads with modplug player. This is the one and only way in which doom.wad is better than doom2.wad. It must be said that hacx.wad sounds a lot better than either though. 3 Share this post Link to post
Skronkidonk Posted July 27, 2021 I use doom as a game to relieve stress. Its fun as hell to play and have been fascinated with it ever as a kid and it never fails to amaze me. 5 Share this post Link to post
Redneckerz Posted July 27, 2021 I use Doom to improve my typing skills. 6 Share this post Link to post
Nikku4211 Posted July 27, 2021 I mostly just play singleplayer, but I have recently been playing multiplayer, both co-op and deathmatch. Too bad most deathmatch servers seem to be for that weird Mega Man IWAD, instead of something like FreeDM. I sometimes use Doom to make levels, though. Whether it's recreating The Skeld or that weird potato waffle bean castle pic circulated on the internet, or making completely original architecture. 3 Share this post Link to post

Dubbag Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) Hi my name is Dubbag, and I'm a drug addict. My drug of choice, Doom. I remember the first time I used Doom, it was at a party. The first high was great but my eternal chase for recreating that feeling caused my life to crumble completely in a matter of weeks. I was quickly addicted and when the new "Doom 2" product hit the streets, forget it. I lost my job, my family and my house and spent three years selling my ass on the street for WADs. I remember going to WAD dealers houses in short shorts in hopes of trying to get a little extra. Living in a ditch on the I-90 with nothing but a cardboard sign which read, "Will work for WADs" and my old dirty ass ET shirt on my back. Eventually I had lost so much weight that I was only around 102 pounds. It wasn't until I got hit by a car last Monday and got up, puked and began walking away with a broken arm and all I was thinking was "I need some Doom" instead of going to the hospital, that I realized that I had truly lost myself and crashed and burned. I guess that I used Doom as an escape from the pressures of everyday life. When I used it, it felt like shooting demons, but I couldn't get enough. I've been clean for a week and I hope that you can all help me in my deepest time of need. Ok but seriously, I use it to decompress and just have fun man lol Edited July 27, 2021 by Dubbag 17 Share this post Link to post
Hawk of The Crystals Posted July 27, 2021 As a video game to waste my precious short time on this earth; mainly since I can distract myself from my own existence. But yeah, doom is fun, and it helps me relieve stress. 2 Share this post Link to post
BaileyTW Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) As game. Singleplayer only at this point. My internet connection is too trash for deathmatch, specifically cause my laptops network adapter is kinda failing on me. I guess if I were to give a deeper answer though. I don't really do much in general. Like I've been trying to get a job for 3 years now, not a drop of luck. So at the very least beating harder and harder challenges in doom gives me at least some sense of accomplishing something. Not much but I'm too poor to indulge in the hobbies of skill that are more socially acceptable, so video game it is. Not really sure about the reflexes thing. I think as you play a game it's not so much that there's a significant increase in reflex just that you are doing a thing a lot so you learn what to actually react to rather than get a huge amount better at reacting. At least that's my observation with it and most other games really. 1 Share this post Link to post
ZeMystic Posted July 27, 2021 Sometimes I use doom as a nice coaster to impress guests. 3 Share this post Link to post
Mystic 256 Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) I like playing it for fun and exploring many of the different cool maps made by people and playing multiplayer on zan/oda/zd and I just really talking about doom and doom stuff in general. Its really fun game. I also like to map/mod sometimes but I don't think people aren't really excited/hyped for my maps and probably don't really need me in community/collab projects, so I mostly just make stuff for fun for myself lately. 0 Share this post Link to post

To answer the question, maybe I've tried to improve my reaction times at points, but I soon realized that was basically a lost cause, and just hope now I can react quickly when I need to. 2 Share this post Link to post
out_of_service Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) It's a distraction. Sometimes I'll load up a playlist of my favourite tunes/podcasts along side Doom and I'm gone for hours at a time. 0 Share this post Link to post
CBM Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) right now, I am using doom to teach myself how to create 3d monsters from scratch... I am doing it all myself.. the 3d modelling from scratch, handdrawing textures, the animations from scratch, the doom data files from scratch... here is the latest little 3D model monster guy that I will be adding to GZFreeDOOM (replaces spider master mind and I need to figure out a name.. spider master bot? spider security master bot??) 3 Share this post Link to post
Gibbon Posted July 27, 2021 Same thing as I used it for back in '94. Shooting demons, trying to find all the secrets, just having fun. 1 Share this post Link to post
Bobby :D Posted July 28, 2021 I use it as a canvas, except I have the art skills of a toddler. Art's interpretive, right? 1 Share this post Link to post

Final Verdict Posted July 28, 2021 For therapy: To stop the voices and paranoia from overwhelming me. It also serves as a way to release my violent tendencies and bottled up rage from my traumatic childhood. It's quite therapeutic. I'm kidding of course. Honestly, I have been playing Doom since 1994 but never really thought about it this way. It helps with stress I suppose? All I know is it's highly addictive and you enter at your own risk. I mean it's kept me entertained for almost 3 decades so it must be good for something. 3 Share this post Link to post

Omniarch Posted July 28, 2021 It makes my monke brain gib me happy juice. In all seriousness though, I use Doom as simple entertainment, as well as a creative outlet. Writing about it, thinking about it and, occasionally, making my own levels for it... I've never had a game enagage me on so many different levels. 1 Share this post Link to post

Someone I've known for a very long time is a paranoid schizophrenic and gaming is his primary release mechanism for it. He's mentioned on several occasions that it really helps him so I know it works. Another thing that helps him is being treated like a human being. A little understanding goes a long way. Either way, if it helps then game on I say. 1 Share this post Link to post

I've seen stuff out there that playing first person shooters can sharpen some aspects of person's brain. I don't remember what aspects, to what degree, or how scientific the study was. I just remember seeing it some point so someone has at least looked into it. On topic: I'm personally using doom as an escape from my modern gaming rut. Everything I usually play of the newer variety has started to bore me. Some YouTube content made me resolute to revisit all the games from my youth that I never beat. I've found that doom and its brethren are scratching an itch I didn't know I had. Secondarily, I'm using it as a means to challenge myself and grow in skill outside of competitive multiplayer games. I'm using community yardsticks of skill (ultra violence, pistol starts, hard map packs) to measure my growth as a player. 0 Share this post Link to post
