Welcome to Pineapple Under the Sea Speedmapping Eighteen! After a pretty brutal ass-kicking from Rowdy Rudy last year, the Infamously Quick Cabal of Privatized Military Personnel, otherwise known as the Speeddemons, have been skulking about looking for a new hire to make a better abbreviation for their group name. Seriously, it doesn't even remotely fit. IQCPMP?? Anyways, while they were messing around on Linkedin looking for that marketing schmuck, they figured they needed to try and take over the world again on account of the fact that they're outta money, and since they're all misanthropic and hate humanity and all. Dashing out of their cave bases in the Mayan ruins of the Araya rainforest, the Speeddemons have quickly and brutally forced the planet Earth into a chokehold by occupying many of our major cities and fast-food restaurants. Only one person can stop them... ROWDY RUDY JONES! doom's very own action created by the illustrious @Doomkid! Grabbing his mercenary rifle, Rudy cracks his neck and wipes his brow to set off and eliminate the Speeddemons threat once and for all! We will be using a gargantuan resource pack containing 2500 textures from AquaTex, COMTEX, NightmareTEx, Cagetex, and DUKE NUKEM! The Rowdy Rudy 2 enemy set and weapons have been ported over, as well there are a dozen or so new decorative things for you to use with your map. Read this below to see what things are available. Spoiler Decorations: Shootable Fire Hydrants Shootable Fire Extinguishers New Trees New Dead Trees MISC Foodstuffs Wastebins Junk Piles Traffic Cones A singular chair: Enemy Roster: Zombieman - 40 HP Shotgunner - 60 HP Plasma Guy - 60 HP (replaces Spectre) Chaingunner - 80 HP (replaces WolfSS) Flamethrower Guy - 80 HP (replaces Keen) Rocketman - 120 HP (replaces Hell Knight) Psycho Imp - 150 HP (replaces Arachnotron) Blood Demon - 180 HP Toxicacodemon - 400 HP Flame Caco - 600 HP (replaces Pain Elemental) Mini Mastermind - 500 HP (replaces Chaingunner) (Height: 56 / Diameter: 96 / Drops Chaingun) Flying Mastermind - 2000 HP (replaces Spiderdemon) (Height: 100 / Diameter: 200) Of course, many of the classic enemies remain untouched: Imp - 60 HP Lost Soul - 100 HP Revenant - 300 HP Mancubus - 600 HP Archvile - 700 HP Baron of Hell - 1000 HP Cyberdemon - 4000 HP Spoiler - Maps must be created in 10 hours or less. View the General Speedmapping Guidelines below to see how we time our maps at PUSS. - Maps must be set on Earth (or near Earth). Each map should be a unique place that the Speeddemons have occupied. Perhaps a fastfood restaurant? Or maybe an airport? Who knows! It’s up to you to create a “realistic-ish” location that seems to evoke something of the real world. Use doomcute to the best of your ability to really sell the location to the player. Lean into environmental storytelling HARD! - Maps must be action packed powertrips. So no long winded atmospheric levels, nor any nut crushing Gazebo-esque levels. Short, sweet, punchy and fast. You’re here for a good time, not a long time. Imagine you're a film maker directing the latest Schwarzenegger blockbuster. Make a pun-worthy filmtastic, testosterone fueled, bicep-pumping, good time - Each map must have at minimum two major combat arenas. These arenas are gonna be the biggest battles in your map. Set pieces if you will. This will be a true test for you to construct interesting major engagements. I recommend you play around with the enemies and how different structures can change the dynamics of a fight. - One battle must have at least one surprise ambush escalation encounter. You’re story tellers, add drama and conflict to these battles as they escalate and transform around the player. Maybe some enemies breach the wall with an explosion and flood in? Maybe a wall opens up halfway through revealing additional reinforcements. - Maps must be mostly non linear. While I’m encouraging city maps, they aren’t required, and I hope you do a better job than Doom 2’s city levels. Really try to give the player the feeling that they are able to explore and ‘liberate’ a civilized sector from the Speeddemons. (I say “mostly non-linear” because I’m fine if there is a clear-cut point A to point B, but I want the player to be able to mix up how they walk that path). - **OPTIONAL** A secret that changes the sequence of events that unfold in an arena. For example, what if you find a pump that removes the nukage from the arena, or what if you found a switch that changes the platform structures in an arena, providing more cover for the player? - **OPTIONAL** Berserk Spree room. It’s a classic - **OPTIONAL** Submit to me a very short paragraph that will introduce your level. Set the stage for us as to what the story is for your map. Check out March of the Speeddemons to get an idea of what this is. + Maps must be built with the Doom 2 IWAD Map format is optional, but your map must be beatable in GZDoom. Voodoo mappers beware, some of your trickery may break in advanced ports! + Maps must be built with Jumping/Crouching and Mouselook DISABLED + Resource usage is REQUIRED. NO STEALTH ENEMIES! You'll have to provide your own skies. Oh btw, Custom Skies are required. *** YOUR MAPS WILL BE DUE ON JULY 27th 11:59 PM EST *** Upload your map either to the ROTS channel on my discord server or to this thread. A date before the end of the month will see a pk3 compiled with each qualifying map ordered in chronology of submission. Your mapping time can be nonconsecutive. Your timer will only go down when you are mapping or playtesting. Speedmaps will be under the honor rule. Neither you nor I can prove if a map went over the time limit or not, but trained eyes can see what is and is not a speedmap. If you cheat, people will notice. Any time in Slade used to give a custom sky, midi, etc. is outside of your mapping time. I would recommend spending some time looking over the texture pack before you begin mapping, so that you don’t waste time scrolling. I've included a .txt file for texture hotkeys to help you filter through all that madness. Once your time is up, if you haven’t beaten your map, please spend time to verify that your level is beatable. AFTER YOUR TIME LIMIT IS UP: As a general rule, I'm comfortable with you going back into your wad and picking at it's bones to make sure everything is neat and tidy. Minor texture changes, bug fixing, and thing placement overhaul are fine by me. Excluding special cases, I do not want you building new rooms/sectors after you've already submitted a map to me. The time limit isn't to challenge you to make a map quickly, it's to light a fire under your ass to create something truly cool with a deadline. PUSS is still a speedmapping series, so maps won't be perfect cacoaward level masterpieces, but I would still like for mappers to spend the time polishing maps they have sent to me. There is no cap to how many maps you can submit to these events. Like last year, I'm encouraging you do 'sequel levels' for your submissions. i.e. You have a MapXX and a MapXX2, both following the same conceptual continuity. Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after I upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. Cast: 250 (UV) Tropes: Multiple Arenas, One is multi-stage, Non-linear-ish, Secret that changes the sequence a bit, Berserk Spree Flikflubs: May need more ammo. There's a decoration that is glitching in the resource pack rn, but I'm keeping it. May need to play with the lighting a little on the flickering. I need to make a script for the final arena; but everything seems to work. Synopsis: To come, but since it's MAP01, I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter. Director's Comments: Ruined Base with Nukage. They say knowledge is half the battle, and Rudy needs some knowledge. An old military friend is now a top Admiral in the UAC and should know a few things. He is located on Houston Station, a safe place to talk. Rudy doesnt know that the station has been compromised.... Director's Comments: A big reference to Cairo Station from Halo 2. Furious, he hopped in the nearest vehicle he could find - an abandoned bus - and sped towards his home. There was no way he would let those demon jerks steal his PWAD memorabelia! Rudy pulls up to the driveway just as the bus breaks down, only to find that the demons have changed the locks! Those bastards are gonna pay! Director's Comments: Don't let the stripped down detailing fool you - this was a pain in the ass to make. A whole ass house out of 3d sectors, complete with 3d sector doomcute furniture. What was I thinking? A few hours left to touch some things up, I may try to add some furniture throughout the house when I implement balance changes, but for now this map has broken my brain lol. Unfortuantely the demons have also got to it, and the once alive area has since become abandoned. The UAC also happened to send a message, noticing that Rudy was in the general area. It read as such, "There's a building home to the demon teleporter that's allowing them to easily take over this area. There are some charges that can blow up the building that haven't been activated yet, they should work." Guess it's not a time for a break anymore. Director's Comments: A small coastal area. Your goal is to blow up a building. Hopefully the gameplay's okay. Most of the time was just getting scripts working. There's about 400-500 lines of ACS after all, even after pointing out that it is very unoptimised. It works though... Also, it was originally meant to be at daytime, but I couldn't find a good sky texture. If anybody knows a good realistic sky texture, let me know. It probably just needs more health though. The intel pukes agree, as high-ranking Speed Demons have been covertly tracked going to and from the Spoust Skyscraper. Whatever they're planning, Rudy has been sent to do what he does best( which isn't watching hockey) and clear this particular hotspot." Director's Comments: The starting lobby should be fairly recognizable to anyone who's watched classic action films. Originally, I'd intended for this to have a 'part deux' level following it, but the time just wasn't there to do it.
