ENDOOM Appreciation Thread

I did send you a discord link DM for my next project, that you can make an ENDOOM for. (starts with 123)

Yes, all my projects that have "Line" in the title refer to "Linedefs"

i.e. 100 Line Massacre, 200 Line Massacre: The Slaughtering, 100 Line Christmas, etc.

Ah yes, now I remember. I'll see what I can do! Would be nice to make some sort of reusable font with all the digits so that you can make a new ones for 200 lines, 500 lines, 50 lines etc. It isn't unusual in this business to make templates that are edited to fit the current project.

Here's a quick 30 minute ENDOOM i made that can be used as a template for project endooms if you need one. Even if it's just a small one-off map it's still fun to include some art!

I chose the shotgun since the color palette matches well with what is found in the EGA palette. It is also a very wide sprite, but not tall, which is just what you need for endoom layouts. The font below consists of extremely basic letters, stretched tall, a classic trick when you want something to look ok, but also spell out many letters. A shorter title could of course have cooler lettering. Maybe another color would have worked better?

I added a small sig. in the upper right corner, it is customary to sign your works in the ansi art community. As long as that one is included somewhere or I am listed in a credits section, you can feel free to remix and alter the image to your liking! If you like the idea of text mode sprites, there are probably other iconic sprites that could work well. If you replace the shotgun, you don't have to credit me as the rest is extremely generic.

One day I might make a javascript-based online editor that lets you insert letters into templates and produce this kind of stuff in no-time! I think people would like that as a tool. If some one else does, I will happily provide a few templates/fonts.

The image is just a screenshot from PabloDraw. The grey borders are not part of the artwork.

Did you know that in the ENDOOM for The Ultimate Doom they got the color for the : character wrong for the two newest categories. (Screenshot from Google Image Search).
image.png.d1a73b56d69ec70590a76a02d6f24011.png

It is light cyan instead of yellow on "Technical Support:" and "Special Thanks:". Having it yellow does make the highlighted word pop more, since the : is not seen as part of the word. A neat little trick I hadn't known about until I noticed it in the ENDOOM. Once you see it you can't unsee it.

When I get home, i might just remix that "hole" endoom. I've had the same idea, but i had some slightly different ideas about how to do it.

If you used the half-height characters, you could double the resolution and probably fit him into an Endoom screen. It would look better. There are a few areas with bright green and white that could be problematic.

I could make him fit into an Endoom screen if I wanted to and tried hard enough, but I like the gag that he's to beeg for one. It's also my first attempt at making Endoom art and I used a sprite from Mario RPG as a reference. And I also went in only with colors, because anything shading related with those polka dots would be too advanced for me and probably would've looked messy at the end. I am happy with the result :)

5/5 stars on that endoom! It should go into the doomwiki article about endooms. Many techniques used here, quite a lot of different blocks. Not 100% sure bout the bottom font, but making letters that small is very hard. It might have been better in grey/white, more metallic looking?

I really like the second one. The top one could be greatly improved by starting to use the half height and half width characters as well as shading. I suspect your tool doesn't make it intuitive to use them. What do you use? I really like the shading technique on #2.

I use ENDEDIT by the amazing @jval. The top one could definitely be made a lot more detailed but 'improved'? I quite like the very retro feel of it as it is.

Not sure about everyone else but the text is perfectly readable to me. Changing it to something more white would make it even more readable I guess but I don't think it's worth the trade.

It's not about readability, but about design. You have more shades when designing things in black/white. It would also be more distinct from the background. The font has a sort of striped look, but not quite. Very hard to get it to look good with such small letters and those colors. You end up with having to be inconsistent with the stripes and with so large color differences as there are between brown and bright red, it's fairly noticeable. You get away with more if the colors chosen are closer in RGB values. The brown is #aa5500 and the bright red is #ff5555. Grey would be #555555 and #aaaaaa. Those two are much closer to each other in HSV space.

Really nice piece, interesting use of pseudo-antialiasing/shadow. It looks slightly weather beaten and worn.

Well, you aren't using any of the half blocks nor shading, so it's not really proper retro, it's low detail. I grew up using these kinds of interfaces in the 80s/90s and they generally looked more complex than this. This is more primitive than what good stuff looked like back then. As soon as we had EGA, we had half blocks and shading as far as I can remember. https://int10h.org/oldschool-pc-fonts/fontlist/font?ibm_bios shows a common EGA font. The period that Doom was from is synonymous with the VGA/MCGA bios font, https://int10h.org/oldschool-pc-fonts/fontlist/font?ibm_vga_9x16. It had non square pixels, they were quite tall so artwork from that period is often rendered squashed. Artwork made for 1:1 ratio pixels doesn't really look proper oldschool since the actual look back then had tall and thin characters. So if you want proper retro style, cram in more details and change the aspect ratio. Or do what I do, have period correct hardware lying around ;)

Seriously!! These are gorgeous and I never see them, gotta turn endoom back on when I get home... On the other hand I really don't need the distraction of getting back into anything text mode in my life right now! Shame on you trashy artists that live in the sewers underneath pixel art, shame on you!

I finally started making my own ENDOOMs and am really happy with my two most recent ones!

For OBZEN:

That's so cool. The archvile is in some sort of ascii structure!

Most of this isn't ascii art. It's what is know as ansi art. Ascii is black/white and only the first 127 characters in the common character sets. Use anything beyond that and we move into ansi land. Ascii art can look great, but I don't think it's used much for ENDOOM stuff due to it inherently having more capabilities and a fixed size.

Man, imagine if ENDOOM animations were possible.

ENDHAM.gif.81cdd9f240ed525b50b1da7bcbcf1e78.gif

That would have been awesome, but also possibly a bit annoying. You'd need a good way to cancel them in case people make long ones. You can use the blink attribute for a two frame 'animation'. It isn't very impressive though. Animated titlepic and such would probably be a bigger boon to the community. The animated intermission screens in Doom are quite nice, and I wish we could have had more like that at our finger tips in Doom 2. Doom 2 should have had even more hard-coded stuff put into the wad file. Where is this artwork from?
