IronEagle Competition 48: Eternally Yours

Recommended Posts

Welcome once more to another month of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcomes everyone from the grizzled veteran that can strafe-run with their toes to the doe-eyed newcomer that's still figuring out how to strafe. As long as you enjoy Doom, you're welcome to join us!

This month, participants will challenge themselves against Eternally Yours, the finale of the Doom Core trilogy, created by esteemed mapper Michael Jan Krizik, aka @valkiriforce. While the maps are vanilla, the themes are coherent throughout the maps, the encounters are well-designed, and there is some exploration and puzzle-solving mixed in.

Participants must play these maps on complevel 2 or Doom(strict).

The mapset starts at Map 01. Survival is finishing Map 11. There is a Map 12 that serves as an exit-less credit map. There is no secret map.

Note: You shouldn't encounter any visplane overflows, but there are a few drawseg overflows scattered about that you might find. Of course, that would only be an issue for those tackling the mapset in Chocolate Doom or in DOS.

Download Eternally Yours.

Congratulations to this month's winners (further details are in the post below).

UV: @NaZa (Runner-up: @UncleTito)

HMP: @head_cannon (Runner-up: @SCF)

HNTR: @Andromeda (Runner-up: Pegleg)

Spoiler
  • Template for Chocolate Doom:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file etrnyour.wad -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEetrnyour>

  • Template for PRBoom+:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file etrnyour.wad -complevel 2 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEetrnyour>

  • Template for ZDoom:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file etrnyour.wad  +compatmode 2 -skill <x> +map map01 -record <IEetrnyour>
      • it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom

  • <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV
  • <IEetrnyour> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo

Rules:

The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to.

The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive).

The following are allowed (but not required):

  • Freelook
  • Crosshair
  • Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY

The following are NOT allowed:

  • Crouching
  • Jumping
  • Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops.

Further, more specific, rules are listed below:

Spoiler

  • Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo.
    • You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below).
  • A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.)
  • Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video.
    • If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link.
  • Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit.

Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference.

Spoiler

Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned.

Category System:

  • Category 1: Blind run.
    • This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category.
      • For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1.
  • Category 2: Non-blind.
    • If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2.

If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted.

Difficulty System:

You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. Your first submission is what counts.

Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately.

Submission:

When you submit your run, please the include the following information:

  • The category (1 or 2)
  • The difficulty
  • Whether you survived both episodes and the total time for survival
  • If you didn't survive, the map where you died
  • If you didn't survive, the time of death
  • The port you used (if you included a demo)
  • A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream)

You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g. "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. If you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler.

Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win.

Ranking for this mapset will be determined by:

  • Survival (of both episodes)
  • Total time for survival
  • Total maps completed
  • Total time before final death
  • Kill count in map of death

If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting.

Breaks:

Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick.

Happy Dooming!

Not something I usually do so let's try I guess.

Category: 1

Difficulty: UV

Dead on: MAP07

Time: 1:09:21

Kills: 125+?/129  (125 by dsda-doom's extended hud, at least one vile-resurrected enemy left behind)

Demo: ie_doomydoom_etrnyour.zip

I dodged the killer projectile, and then walked back into it for... no reason whatsoever.

Short commentary (cat1 spoilers):

Spoiler

Spent an embarassing amount of time looking for progression switch in plain sight in map01, but somehow immediately spotted the secret switch for plasma on the minimap. Boy oh boy is that weapon essential to survive. A ton of really mean close range traps all over the set.

I hope there are some blue armors in secrets I missed, that'd make UV a lot more palatable. My recent memory of valkiriforce mapping is from Auger;Zenith, so frankly I expected something... not quite as relentless, I suppose. Map 07 progression remained a confusing mess even after understanding what I'm looking for.

By the end of map 07 I ran pretty dry on ammo even on continous. Admittedly I didn't have a great map 06, my strategic choice chewed through way too much plasma despite all the cells you get on that level.

"What did that switch do?", the wad. I was close to giving up at the end of map 7 (and I still have no idea how the exit opened up), so I guess I no longer had the energy left to think about not dying.

I think I'm on the brink of despair. UV, category 1.

Softlocked at the very end, on MAP11, after killing every monster (except a HK that I skimmed by), on the final obstacle.

This is objectively the most agonizing end to an Ironman run one can imagine. I don't think anything compares to it. I don't know what to say, frankly. I did everything right, and then I got trolled by... well, I don't even know how that happened.

Spoiler

I ran out of rockets.

Greetings! :}

Category 2 (I wanted to play at category 1, but I had to restart the run so much that it would have seemed unfair to pursue cat 1)

Hurt Me Plenty

Dead on Map04 (I didn't want to restart after that. Less lucky than our previous one, and the mapping felt less satisfying)

I didn't think about noting down my time and killcount before leaving, but I checked the number of the map in the Automap. So I guess you'll be able to see that by yourself. Sorry, I am still new to all that ^^'

Cheers! we surely will have more luck next month! :}

Spoiler

Played this years ago, though I had little recollection of anything. This is actually a second demo attempt because I couldn't finnish the first earlier this morning, and I also couldn't finnish this one either!! That's why you may notice how I reacted to stuff up to map 08. You'll also see me standing still in a corner nearing the end of the demo, that's because I had to go AFK (why this happens every time!). Seems like I misjudged how long this could take... oh well, my fault for not choosing a better time to sit and play without interruptions.

Starts at around 21:25 into the video.

Category 1 run on UV. Died on map 4 to an Imp with a particularly nasty ambush where I had the wrong weapon out. Didn't get the monster count since I accidentally pressed the restart level button upon unexpectedly dying.

Took me a while to figure out the Map11 gimmick, and by the time I did, I had wasted all of the given resources.

Oh well, better luck next time I suppose. I'm done with this set for now, mentally and literally.

Cat 2, UV, died on Map11, around 140ish minutes in.

I used DSDA doom.

This was a very fun vanilla mapset. I really enjoyed the frankly ridiculous plasma ordnance compared to other vanilla wads; I can recall maybe one or two barons that I SSG'd, which is a good thing.

Edit: the reason you see me

Spoiler

rocketing the non-opened romero head in Map11 is because I was playing in a library with sound and music off. Laughed my ass off in retrospect.

I'm duly impressed that you made it so far with the sound off. When I play with the sound off, I generally succumb to a monster behind me or some kind of ambush that would have been easy to hear.

It seems death comes in twos this month, with the maps of death (2, 4, 7, 9, and 11) each claiming at least two participants each. Map 08 was the lone map that Maps 01 and 08 only ended one run each (or, as @Steve D might say, it they only claimed one pelt for its their wall), but, thanks to a last-minute submission, they were even a pair.

Map 04 did the yeoman's work this month, claiming the runs of 40% 37.5% 35.3% of the participants.

EDIT 2: Map 11 ended the runs of three participants. One may say this ruined the symmetry of all the twos, but Map 04 ended the runs of 6 participants, which is 3 x 2, so there's still a two! Yay for mental contortions.

Edited by Pegleg : EDIT 1: Added Map 01 due to CNR's run. EDIT 2: Added due to a last-minute submission from h_c.

Dead in MAP11 with 146 kills.

Spoiler

I didn't figure out the Icon Of Sin puzzle, and died to attrition.

The constant ambush monsters got a little predictable, and the layouts were often too cryptic and too cramped, but Eternally Yours had its moments. There were instances of interesting or nasty traps, and a few neat vanilla special-effects as well. MAP07's "Town of infinite switch-hunts" definitely overstayed its welcome, though.
