Angmngthoo : Brutalist architectural style inspired single map [Boom-compatible]

Very fun and aesthetically pleasing level, love me some brutalism. The blue key fight was by far the standout, with a massive difficulty spike compared to the previous relatively easygoing arenas. 

 

Nitpicks of note:

- 2 hell knights spawn in each other in the chaingun fight instead of being replaced by an imp on non-UV difficulties

Spoiler

- If the secret invuln for the blue key fight is supposed to be that difficult to find it should be tagged as a secret in my opinion. I had to open up Doom Builder in order to find the tiny switch that raises another switch that reveals the powerup lol

Looks absolutely gorgeous from the screenshots. It’s nice to see takes on brutalism that are more sophisticated than just “LOL ITS GRAY :DDDDD”  Hope I can find time to play it soon

Just finished, it was excellent - you're on to a great thing here, I'd love to see more

I actually like the Hell Knights stuck on top of each other - they look like they have mutated or are being tortured or something haha

hi fai here I just did a little update to fix some issue

DOWNLOAD

  • add a new secret
  • no more stacking hell knight
  • tweak difficulty a little bit

Excellent level! Fun to aggressively speed through on the second run.

Although, the secret switch felt a bit too easy to find, and not sure what the hint thing is for since there's only one way out of the start room.

Not to derail the thread too much, but I'm just curious what exactly didn't went well (assuming you are referring to doomium)? Everything seemed quite smooth, I was also planning to record some demos for it, but it's not getting finalized / pushed to idgames for some reason.

hi! completed this map yesterday. i don't know about brutalist architecture (at first i thought it meant the buildings were designed for brutal doom where players could ascend high vertical walls). but this map has really nice visuals! the ending was cool too, the central pillars seeming like a safe place to take cover from archies, only to ambushed from a different direction by concealed revenants. thanks for making+sharing this awesome handiwork :)

The Brutalist in the description wasnt kidding, its quite brutal in combat as well
The monster placement is definitely hard, but with all the ample space around you can manage to avoid most attacks.

Cool level great aesthetics I really like brutalism combined with vegetation and this scratches that itch perfectly

By complete chance I ran into this commentary and... I'm sorry? I had to take a break from Doom last December, and didn't have the time to map for Doomium. I thought the project would be completed without my map. I didn't want to contribute with a low effort level. Well, I'm since then wishing the best of luck with the project. But I guess I have to deliver something? I didn't mean to disrespect anybody, but fai never called me out "hey, I need your map pretty please?"

I was really interested in this map since I seen bio play it. I definitely also had a hard time with some of these fights lol. The Archie fight is deceptively hard. I love the Serene tranquil tree atmosphere that goes along with it well done

I felt compelled to check out some of your earlier work after completing Doomium II. This was excellent! I encourage anyone who missed this the first time around to give it a spin. If you were to make more maps (or even a megawad) in this style, I'd be the first to download them.

An excellent map with amazing aesthetics and great combat.

Truly a must-play

Thanks to Ash, I also found this map and gave it a go with Supercharge! I love everything about this map except for the two viles in the final fight. :P

 

 

 

Would love to see more maps from you, bonus points if they have lots and lots of concrete!
