Yeah this one is a toughie to do consistently—going into the squisher hallway with a supercharge on top of your health (as well as a blue armor) can help soften things, but it's real easy to get trapped all the same. You can try and coax the first few barons out of their cubbies and hit their switches before angering the entire room, but I usually get cornered when I'm not playing with the whole floor space. IMO best option is probably to run in circles, first aggro'ing all of the barons out of their cubbies and then swooping in to hit their switches while they swarm the middle. You gotta be quick with your turns and reactive to the acid balls to manage it successfully however—which is why I recommend grabbing the supercharge and blue armor. Glad you're enjoying the map; I was always bummed that the original Doom's E4M8 lacked the sadistic bite that made stuff like E4M2 & E4M6 so memorable, and I wanted to rectify it by 1) severely de-powering the player through a lack of ammo, and 2) returning barons back to their rightful place as a terrifying boss monster capable of bullying the player. It's a bit of a risky gamble to turn the final map of the set into a gimmicky "corral all the monsters into teleporters", but thankfully after the amount of blood being shed in E4M7, the change in gameplay will hopefully come as a reprieve. That, and a lot of E4 (M3/M4/M5/M6/M8) seems to be about "run from the monsters first, fight later" 2 Share this post Link to post

I was teasing them out one at a time but it wasn't working out. Will try that strategy and see how it goes! It's my favorite map of the set, I'm definitely a fan of the tough but fair challenge (as in, it's very tough but you can see a path to victory) Hopefully, I'll have good news on it soon! 🤞 3 Share this post Link to post

Suitepee Posted September 21 https://youtu.be/UyIxs1XJ8oI = episode 1. https://youtu.be/LswmH5K0LUY = episode 2. https://youtu.be/q57XWXaKws8 = episode 3. https://youtu.be/O9xTXjFQAk4 = episode 4. (E4M1-E4M4 and E4M9) https://youtu.be/xs5r3G4CkQQ = episode 4 part second. (E4M5-E4M8) After waiting over a decade to play this (ever since I enjoyed D2INO back in 2013/2014), it was well worth the wait. @dobu gabu maru stole the show with the best maps in episodes 1 (E1M7), 3 (E3M3) and 4 (E4M8), but there was a generally good feel of quality control throughout the whole project for the most part. I didn't enjoy Deimos Lab, Mt Erebus or Dis too much though. I was pleasantly surprised by @TimeOfDeath666's E4M9 map, since I was expecting a much beefier slaughter map but got something rather creative instead. (I did godmode the awkward platforming parts though) It was also nice to play a @mouldy map that I hadn't touched before. Overall, a fun megawad to play through. Any chance of Final Doom in Name Only? ;) 9 Share this post Link to post

cannonball Posted September 22 Cheers for playing through this John, (literally realised you were streaming when you just finished last night). Glad you enjoyed this on the whole. @Scotty Honestly I think a plutonia follow up would be great in your hands. So you will have no complaints from me taking on the potential next installment. 5 Share this post Link to post

Cheers John, sad to have missed the finale but it was great to see you piece together how to play E4M8 without any guidance whatsoever. Nothing makes me happier than throwing a puzzle or gimmick map into a set and people intuit how to handle it :) Also, 90% of the detailing in E4M7 is Peanut's work! I primarily gave a huge overhaul to the flow of the map and the fights therein. As for the bizarre Spider Mastermind fight in E4M8: Spoiler Three things you didn't consider: 1) You missed 3 secrets that provide the player with 100 cell each, as well as some secret soulspheres and a secret mega armor. Grab all of them and the fight is doable, although still "lame" as you put it. 2) Continuous players are likely coming into the set with a huge supply of cell, rockets, shells, etc. If they don't like the idea of an ammo starvation map, I thought it was only "fair" to offer them a somewhat cheeky exit they could grab. Personally I wish Heels had done something similar for E3M8. 3) The name of the map! Unto the Cruel comes from Proverbs 5, where Solomon advises against associating with adulterous women, lest they lose their "years" to someone that is cruel. The map has a weird start because it's a reenactment of the Proverb—the player starts by facing the arachnid seductresses, and they are literally forced to turn their back to them and take a harder, nobler path, one that will require the wisdom Solomon espouses. Good luck to Scotty and whoever else wants to tackle TNTINO—there's quite a few fun names in the Final Doom set. As for me, I'm helping Steve wrap up Realm of Chaos 2—which I've edited 10 maps for and submitted 2 originals, so any fan of UDINO should keep their eye on it. 8 Share this post Link to post
