What is your favourite DOOM wads

Recommended Posts

If we're talking about maps and megawads aswell: Valiant and Rowdy Rudy II have a very soft place in my heart with their own takes and rosters of custom enemies and arsenal (and especially their nature-based theme of their respective earlier maps)

I don't often play with gameplay mods, but when I do: I prefer Vesper (especially when playing Vesper DM like holy hell was that some of the most fun I've had in a multiplayer game)

For wads it has to be Sunlust and hell forged. They're some of the best wads of their decade, and hell forge bosses are some of the best I've ever seen. For doom mods in general, god complex is my favorite. It never gets old, the progression system is fantastic, and it's great at preventing me from getting tired of doom.

adding it on now, eviternity and it's sequel are some of the greatest wads I've ever played. would recommend over even sunlust, ancient aliens, and alien vendetta.

The Cyriak wads are god tier:

Going Down - https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/gd

Overboard - https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/overboard

One I found recently through the Dean of Doom that I think has some of the best looking maps out there:

Lost Civilization - https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/megawads/joi_lstcv15

Also, here is a great one for HALLOWEEN, Unloved! Silent Hill in Doom.

Unloved - https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/Ports/s-u/unloved

If we are talking gameplay wads, nashmove is one I really enjoy. (Even though it can break some maps. But easier platforming/easier to selectively pick up items makes it worth it!)

Nashmove - https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=35761&hilit=nashmove

Total Chaos is barely even doom, but I love it so much! A lot of my love for it matches reasons why I love Unloved! Cry of Fear in Doom.

In no particular order:

  • Bloodstain
  • Epic 2
  • Deneb Colony
  • Doxylamine Moon : Overdose
  • Object 34 Sonar (basically everything from Lainos's Testament series)
  • Double Impact
  • Doom The Way Id Did
  • Doom 2 The Way Id Did
  • Doom The Way Id Did : Lost Episodes
  • Doom Damnation (still haven't played the updated version actually)
  • Pirate Doom
  • TNT: Revilution
  • Nihility : Infinite Teeth
  • Alpha Accident
  • Interception
  • Alfonzone
  • Suspended In Dusk
  • HFFM
  • Hellcore 2.0
  • Hellbound (I should revisit this as I didn't complete it)
  • SCRAPS
  • Zen Dynamics
  • Plutonia 2
  • Action Doom 2
  • Sigil
  • Ol' No Name

I guess also Crucified Dreams, not because it's good deathmatch (supposedly, it's not), but because it's completely goddamn gorgeous to look at, and has given me a fair bit of architectural inspiration over the years.

Deus Vult 2 falls in a similar category, extremely inspiring visuals, but I was nowhere near an adequate skill level for that when I played it way back then, so I just blasted through with cheats. I should try go give that one a go legit some day.

For me, it's a simple list.

#1  :  DOOM 64 for DOOM 2

Fucking immaculate work done here. It's a full on REMAKE of DOOM 64 and ALL of it's levels with mapping akin to some of the best wads out there. A full MIDI soundtrack with great level by level execution, really creative workarounds and ideas, just... chef's kiss. If you are a fan of DOOM 64, go play this, NOW!

#2  :  Nostalgia

Unlike every other mod that tries to "capture that good ol' id software feel", Nostalgia takes one good look at all of them and says "I can do it 10x better", creating one of the most fun and creative "Nostalgia Bait" wads I've ever played. Nostalgia is a great wad to play for someone fresh out of the IWADS and looking for a new challenge with great level design and a fun time, with some banger MIDIs to boot and a fun level naming scheme.

#3  :  DOOM: The Golden Souls

I've always considered myself more of a Sonic and SEGA fan, but GOD is it hard to not love Nintendo's library at the same time, their games have gone down as certified classics within the gaming community...

But...

What if one of the most brutal games of the early 90's, merged with the amazing lineage of Nintendo's legacy.

You have DOOM: The Golden Souls! Being a semi spoof of Super Mario 64, DOOMGUY is on a quest to retrieve golden souls from various paintings that accompany this strange castle. The Story? UAC shenanigans that led to demonic shenanigans, yadda yadda, grab the double barrel. But this mod is just... so damn fun and just... works. Filled with neat little nods and reflections to NES, SNES, and N64 games. This mod is a blast to playthrough and such an enjoyable time for any fan of both DOOM and Nintendo.

And that is my contribution to this thread out of the way!

My favorite is Ancient Aliens. I love the aesthetics, the music, the challenge. It taught me a lot about playing Doom and does a good job of making its difficulty feel possible. Sort of like how Dark Souls grinds you into the dirt over and over until you get the skill to progress.

I am of course also a big fan of Plutonia with its heavy emphasis on tricking and surprising the player. It is very much like playing troll levels in Mario Maker. In Plutonia's case I would say I definitely am more a fan of its brown and green aesthetics than the gameplay. But it does make me chuckle when I get blasted by surprise chaingunners. Always gotta be on guard.

The Golden Souls

That's another good one. Enemies are a bit spongy, but the overall design oozes with charm. Always loved the big gold coins with Doomguy's grinning face on them.

I should play the sequels sometime.

My favorite type of doom is the giant, abstract, oppressive, construct type maps that give me a certain liminal feeling when immersed in them.  Maps don't need to be giant of course but most of those listed below give me a similar feeling.

-Sunder

-Abandon

-Fractured World's

-Combat Shock

-Sunlust

-Entropy

-Capybara

-Balls of Steel Community project

-Microslaughter community project

Though I do like other stuff too, these are also some of my favorites.  At least the ones I can think of top of my head lol

-Speed of doom

-Valiant

-Ancient Aliens

-Going Down

-Overboard

-Heartland

-Auger Zenith

-Eviternity

Teeeeechnically that's a PK3...

Yeah GS is such a fun time. It just puts a smile on my face whenever I go back to play it. GS2 is also good but I have a soft spot for 1, hope 3 turns out well, looks very promising.

My all-time favourite has to be Alien Vendetta. Looks gorgeous and plays fiendishly for it's time, and is an absolute classic.

The same could be said for Scythe II, the 5-level episodic structure make it's themes stand out, and the combat also doesn't slouch! Especially in the last two episodes.

Lately, I've started to love Bloodstain, it's a lushious blend of gorgeous detail and fun, frenetic action. I'm on MAP09 so far, yet I'm looking forward to what the next map will offer me, and to me, that's an valuable quality.

I don't really have an all-time favourite that I like to hang my hat on. Or, rather I do, but it changes from month to month and week to week. I see the various merits in a broad category of wads and what I'm enjoying really depends on how my week is going. I know, such a non-answer lol.

The most recent thing that I played through which I thoroughly enjoyed was a little project called "Dust Devil (DDevil.pk3)". It's a short and sweet adventure spanning a single map (well, technically two...) which makes great use of line portals in a non-gimmicky way. The back and forth between the two bases also feels pretty great as a natural part of progression. It has a tech base for tech base lovers and a deserted outpost for those that enjoy ruined and abandoned architecture. The architecture feels unreal in the sense where you have to stop and examine the rooms above other rooms, because that's something you don't really see in ordinary maps. It's a 30 minute tops adventure that one can finish on their lunch break. It's both a pro and a con, but oh well.

All things considered, the wads I played the most not counting doom 1 & 2 would probably be the original Plutonia and Plutonia 2. I have a strong love-hate relationship with Gusta's maps lmao.

At least in terms of visual style, no vanilla wad can top Back to Saturn X.

Plus, it's hysterical when you see an enraged suicide bomber, which has a blast radius of at least the map, get blocked by the player standing on a 64x64x64 box.

Came into this thread for recommendations as an old man who's super new to WADs, and I've heard Sunlust mentioned a TON. Adding it to the list!

nice! try hell-forged as well, if you're ok with more medieval themes, and new enemies. the bosses are very well designed.

You know, I'm usually not except for FPS stuff for whatever reason (Heretic and Hexen were common sights in my home growing up), so I'm sure I'll be down for that one too, thanks!

good. while hell forged is still certainly a fps, the melee is far better.

Favorite WAD as a whole is really up in the air for me. Typically I'd just go with stuff by Skillsaw, pcorf, Doomkid, The Way id Did, BTSX, typical choices.

...as far as Mods and major TCs like the ones in OP, Brutal Wolfenstein 3D might be not just my favorite TC, but the best Wolfenstein game in general imo.

All of the OG levels + SOD being remade and remastered in GZDoom from the ground-up would be enough for me to love it. Hell, functional push-walls and horizontal doors is enough to get a gold star from me knowing how the Doom engine works (according to the automap they had to make each door a part of the level geometry), but added to that you have new enemies, all 6 OG weapons + 16 new ones, modernization of the treasure mechanics, removal of lives, melee and dual wield mechanics from New Order, a remastered OST, and of course brutal doom-style gore.

My best comparison would be to stuff like the Resident Evil remakes or AM2R, where everything feels equal parts familiar and brand new in the best way possible. It's a very "id, HIRE THIS MAN!" sort of mod. My ONLY gripe is that I don't get why all "brutality" mods need to add reloading (especially now that Doom 2016 and Eternal showed that's not necessary), but thankfully you can turn it off... though the downside is that means the Garand never pings :( you can't turn it off in Hearts Of Liberty though, but that's a fan-made addon.

All in all, I love it enough to shill for it whenever I can. It's basically the perfect way to modernize wolf 3D, and the dedication on display after 7 years of development is insane. More so than even vanilla Brutal Doom and Brutal Doom 64 imo.

Brutal Wolf seems cool but it left a bit of a hard first impression for me when it defaults to the UV equivalent with absurdly high enemy damage rolls when starting a new game. encountering the SS for the the first time in E1F10 was insane. also headshot mechanics in the Doom engine with 2D sprites feels really awkward and it seems like they fan hit them on you too the way shots seem to randomly deal massive amounts of damage sometimes
