Going Down was a mistake for me

Recommended Posts

I beat doom 2 and decided "I should play Going Down on UV!" I've been on it since August 2023, still on it, my thread before of "hey I only use shotgun" is now void because I went SSG because after map 14 I couldn't keep going, I truly have a skill issue. :)

Maybe play on easier difficulty or actually use different weapons - it's ok to reach your doom skill limit.

Hey! It's the shotgun scalie!

Honestly I think it's valid to set wacky self-imposed challenges with vanilla Doom and Doom 2. those levels were designed at the infancy of a whole new way of play, so after 30 years of FPS literacy going back to those stock levels can be a bit too much of a cakewalk without something to spice it up.

But even by 1996 mappers were getting familiar enough with the game to make maps of their own that are a proper challenge to get thru even with the most generous of playstyles, and that could not be truer for Going Down (well aside from the bit about being from '96)

I'm sure you've heard the story before in your former thread, but Cyriak did make GD with an 80's Konami philosophy to game challenge even for the lower difficulty settings with the expectation that players would play continuous. so don't feel bad for getting your ass handed to ya from it. I've got Plutonia, Rowdy Rudy 2, Tangerine Nightmare, and Valiant under my belt yet even when tackling it on HMP continuous; I can't even make it past map05.

Relatable. Currently playing a megawad that is very hard for me but I'm not allowing myself to abandon the playthrough since I'm so deep into it now (currently map27). When I want to doom I want to play something easy, remember that I'm supposed to be grinding the hard megawad and end up not playing. That happens often but sometimes I do make progress, so, there's gonna be an end to this eventually... This was a mistake, but it's too late to stop

That's not much of a skill issue and more or less an issue of the game that you've beat previously. Doom 2 isn't really a difficult game to begin with (the entire thing for one thing lacks a difficulty progression like the first one). Use a lot of saves in your first playthroughs and learn the map's layout, the enemy placement and the health/item placement. You'll get better at this soon enough if you're to replay a section several times.

It could be worse. You could've been playing Heretic.

No-Man Baugh's post is good.  Most custom levels are more difficult than the original Doom II by miles.   And even between different custom levels, the way maps exercise-and-reward different skills-and-playstyles vary vastly from one another.  Even advice like "just play on HNTR" is kinda scuffed advice for a hundred reasons.  GD is particularly hard and chaotic.  If it's your first time playing GD, I'd just play it casually with saves and on whatever difficulty, really, for GD at least.  It's just a really good mapset on it's own.  At the end of the day, I don't think anything should prevent you from at least trying a self-imposed challenge if you're in the mood for some reason, just don't sink your ego or soul into it too deeply.

Not always true.  There's the old Pacifist Player saying, "Don't shoot your shotgun at crazy"

It's definitely a more difficult mapset. I've attempted it a few times but I keep losing interest and stopping partway. You may wish to test your skills on easier maps first. Final Doom (TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment) are "official" IWADS, although fan-made. They're a distinct step up - Plutonia being several steps up in fact.

Oh, it's supposed to be played continuous. Okay, then that changes things. I'd been trying to do it pistol starting each time.

I was considering going down, but when I got to the part with the pinky I had to stop. It had teeth, and there was blood all over the floor. With the help of steroids, I destroyed it with my fist and discovered it was too late to make a joke about it on a Doomworld thread. The wad is big, and the textures are divine, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

How about with a gameplay mod? Seems perfect for a singular shotgun enjoyer.

Or replace SSG assets with the SG ones

IIRC, mouldy himself has stated in the past that going down is most fun when played on HMP. There's no reason to insist on sticking with UV.

Going Down was a happy accident.

Anime was the real mistake, contributing to 90% of mental illnesses in western youth.

I'm kidding so don't bite me.

The difficulty scales of various WADs are all over the place. I never think of shaming anyone for playing at their preferred level, even though ITYTD is otherwise a very generous HNTR.

Going Down is very challenging for me; I can't consistently pistol start each level on HMP.

Yeah giong down was a mistake for me too. I actually suffer from vertigo so when my significant other asked me to do it I got into this huge dizzy spell and couldn't think straight for hours.

Oh, you mean the mapset.
