megawads that made you go like this

Recommended Posts

Either levels that are really hard:

Hard Cover and Necropolis from Going Down

Death from Scythe 2

The Killing Fields from 50 Shades of Graytall

Gutter Grave from 3 Heures d’Agonie 2

Or levels that are really long or confusing:

Nemesis from Alien Vendetta

Trinary Temple from Ancient Aliens

Dehydration from Eviternity

Tricyclic Looper from BTSX E1

Ogdoad from Epic 2

A couple of maps in BTSX2 keep me from going back to it more than they should... They're good maps, fantastic in looks and design even, but just too long and freeform. Edit: can't remember the names.

This is one of the big upsides to pistol starting. When the inevitable shitfest (every WAD has at least one) comes along, you just skip it and carry on. Life's too short and there are far too many good WADs out there to get bogged down in lamenting one or two maps. I believe a number of ports let you warp and keep your ammo and weapons unlike IDCLEV, if you prefer continuous play.

Nobody's forcing anyone to play stuff they don't like. If you're handed a free pizza that has one slice of anchovy and broken glass topping, you're allowed to eat around it and still enjoy it.

Summer of Slaughter MAP30 - Godhood Cathedral.

So I heard you liked Archviles with your saw traps.

Summer Of Slaughter Level 30 UV. There is only ONE video on youtube of someone finishing it from beginning to end.  I made over 20+ saves in that level with different parts of it, spent more then 5 hours in a course of two days.  What a stressful level.

Everytime I plan on:

- replaying Scythe, I remember MAP28 (the SR50 speedrun map).

- replaying Scythe 2, I remember MAP31 (the deathmatch secret), 26 (Death) and especially 29 (can’t remember the name, the painful slog of a map).

- replaying Eviternity 2, I remember MAP33 (or 34? The Skyroads remake map).

- replaying Alien Vendetta, I remember MAP27 (Stench of Evil).

The end of Alien Vendetta. I don't think 27 and 28 are as bad as some people say but after playing 2 other rather long maps, it all starts to feel like a bit much.

The last map of Sacrament because getting lost in it is really easy.

Requiem, for me, is the embodiment of this. Never have I ever seen a megawad with such an even split of "game" and "THAT part". I still love it to bits, however.

[anyone playing Memento Mori for the first time]

This map's by... who? Jens Nielsen?

[15 mins later]

Okay...

[another 15 mins later]

Fuck.

[approx. 150 mins of game time later]

[through sobs] Nobody told me there'd be Hexen-style switch-hunting...

Alright, this thread is just perfect for my thoughts on DOOM (the original three episodes).

E1M4 to E1M4: Pretty good, always look forward to replaying these levels.

E1M5: Kinda pushing it, and it's something of a drag.

E1M6 & E1M7: real pace killers and I do not look forward to replaying them every time.

E1M8: Nice, short and to the point. A great way to end Knee-Deep in the Dead.

E1M9: Well worth the effort to hunt down, a nice action packed secret level.

E2M1 & E2M2: Pretty good in my opinion, the pacing on these maps are on point and they aren't too obnoxious to navigate

E2M3: A real letdown of a level, do not look forward to replaying.

E2M4: An okay map for the most part, just not as good as the first two maps
E2M5 and E2M6: Both maps drag on more then they need to and are a pain to navigate. I never look forward to replaying these.
E2M7 and E2M8: These last two maps singlehandedly lift the weaker parts of episode 2 on their shoulders and are a good conclusion to The Shores of Hell.

E2M9: It's kinda meh. Not worth the effort to find even if it is short and to the point.

E3M1 and E3M2: Great maps and an excellent way to start what was originally doom's intended final episode. I especially like Slough of Despair for it's general setup as a "power and arm back up" level where you recover nearly all of your arsenal.

E3M3 to E3M7: Utterly forgettable garbage that drags episode 3 down like crazy. I especially dread and dislike E3M5 because I know it's home to one of the most confusing and tedious teleporter systems/traps in DOOM

E3M8: It's kinda funny how E3M8 and E1M8 both share that quality of being nice, short and to the point in my opinion. But it still has to be said, and it's not a bad way to conclude DOOM (if you're not counting Thy Flesh Consumed)

E3M9: A great and inventive secret level that is well worth the effort to hunt down, even if it looks like a rehash of E3M1 at first.

So yeah there are parts of DOOM that in my subjective opinion that are so bad that I dread replaying them. I also think DOOM could have benefited from maybe having a couple of monsters from DOOM 2. Not the entire DOOM 2 roster, merely just the Hell Knight, Revenant and Former Commando (I think those three alone would work surprisingly well under DOOM 1 styled combat).

Probably the back half of Epic 2 where it starts turning into slaughtermaps because that's how you do increased difficulty apparently. :P

I love scythe but that stupid speed run level I can NEVER beat. I get close and then give up and noclip out.
