What is the point of telefragging a Spider Mastermind when you already have beserk and invulnerability is right there?

Subverting the expectations is the point, if you ask me, and I really liked that scene in MAP03 ;) . Both getting scared by SMM so early and then dealing with her that easily.

Also and more serious answer - if you're only playing on GZDoom, you are not aware of the struggle which is berserking spiders or mancs in other source ports. Most of the hits simply don't land.

Someone explain the difficulty to me.

Maps 1 - 3 are stupidly easy and entirely overkill with so many extra beserks, chainsaws, soulsphere. What is the point of telefragging a Spider Mastermind when you already have beserk and invulnerability is right there? I felt disappointed by that fight so I intentionally restarted the level just so I could punch the mastermind to death with nothing but beserk and peeking around corners, no invulnerability or telefrag. Made for a better fight.

But then we go from E on MtPain27's scale of difficulty to like B+. The next map (4) is totally ridiculous and bullshit with the difficulty. Tight cramped spaces for rocket fight with hundreds of enemies. The very annoying part is that every encounter is filled with traps and ambushes the player can't see in advance or prepare for. You think a room looks empty, or few in numbers, only for you to walk into it, get immediately locked out so you're stuck in a tiny space, then a Cacodemon or a chaingunner or 50 imps pop out of nowhere and are an inch from your face. I don't mind difficulty, but this is just bullshit difficulty. This is why I hate teleporting monsters.

Interestingly, the original concept for that map 3 fight was to berserk punch the mastermind to death, and I very quickly realised this was not only impossible in some ports, but also just a terrible idea. Like "here, punch this wall for 30 seconds", its just not interesting gameplay, whereas giving the player a stream of teleporting monsters means they have a race to prioritise a continually evolving threat.

Map 4 is basically teaching you how to use a rocket launcher. Its all about judging how much distance you need to minimise splash damage, using rockets to carve out a space to work with, being able to switch weapons quickly and being aware of your health resources. This is pretty much how its going to be for the rest of the wad though, so feel free to quit now if it isn't your thing.

Beserk + Invulnerability is going to be punching a wall for 30s. Only difference is 1 boss vs several wimpy monsters. Either way it's god mode. Like I said, it was much more interesting and fun for me personally to beserk punch while peeking out of the grates, because it's an actual fight. At any rate, map 4 was probably not as hard as I made it out to be. It's just the first 3 I got by without saving, and they lulled me into a false sense of security, then 4 spikes the difficulty quite a bit, which threw me off.

So I just finished map 32 (on hmp), I'm doing a continuous run and unless if it was in a secret I've missed I'm really surprised I haven't found a bfg yet. Outside of map 32 the standard weapons were good enough but it is surprising given I know I had one at this point in the original.
