Revolution! MIDI Pack project (COMPLETE! Also a surprise on page 10)

Recommended Posts

Here's CWolfRu's track for MAP12. It might not be wholly the way it sounded before, but it's at least a good deal longer now.

Midnight Dinner

EDIT: Doomhuntress, your edit of Westopolis still doesn't quite loop seamlessly. I did prefer the original version with the outro so if you don't mind I'm gonna have a look-see what I can do.

EDIT 2: Found the problem - the MIDI editor you're using puts a bunch of unneeded controller events in the bar after the very last used in the song, so the MIDI overruns by a fraction. Removing everything inside bar 137 will fix it and not cause any problems since I'm pretty sure all MIDI controllers get reset anyway when a track loops. If I was unclear that this was the nature of the problem, I apologize!

Fixed (I reckon) version here: Westopolis

Totally different, much better than before, sounds really well.
It also reminds to me "Pirates of the Caribbean" + "Doctor Who" now, haha!

EDIT: Ermnnn... damn it...
I can't do anything good to 32th... that's not good.

I guess I can join this project, perhaps as a backup in case someone doesn't submit in time.

The only trying I can feasibly assume you did was in the area of making something deliberately pointless to waste people's time.

To be fair, he only wasted 12 minutes of my time. :')

@Jimmy, i have to admit, i have no idea what the issue you described is. i do still use FL Studio for writing MIDI files, and i've been made fully aware that they bloat MIDI files with unnecessary garbage. normally i'd go and fix the files with Sekaiju as best i can, but there's a problem with that: whenever i try to fix MIDI files that has say, pitch-bending in them (like Westopolis does), once i'm done fixing the file, all pitch-bending actions don't work anymore. i'm not really sure why that is, but all the tracks i submitted sans Mint Petal has pitch-bending in them.

i guess if i learned how to write MIDIs in Sekaiju i wouldn't have a problem with this, but i've used FLS so much, it'd interrupt my work-flow otherwise.

Sorry to hear that, Doomhuntress. I don't have a problem with fixing up your MIDIs if you'd rather I take care of them. They might all need a bit of a manual filesize reduction anyway if FL Studio is that trigger-happy with controller events. :<

---

I'm claiming slot 26, by the way. Yes I haven't shared anything of my own yet, but I seem to be struggling. Might let my other slots go if I can't get anything by tomorrow.

@Jimmy, file-size is usually fine on my end. well, it could be better, but the only way i'd really get the size to bloat up a lot if it has: tons of channel-panning events, tons of instruments playing at the same time, and of course the length of the song itself.

i'd like being able to fix up my files myself, but if Sekaiju just blanks pitch-bending for whatever reason, it just feels a bit worthless to really bother with it.

sorry for double-post, but i got a track that could go into either map07 or map30 if allowed. i showed the track to the Mutiny project-leader before, but it's technically not in-use in the project yet, so... maybe it is eligible? https://www.dropbox.com/s/uuph58qn0iropvi/Die%20You%20Fucking%20Bastard.mid?dl=0

this track i DID fix with Sekaiju so it should hopefully be free of bloat. if the track-name is too "obscene", maybe change it to like, "Dead Time" instead.

Brand new track for MAP02: Trash! Could conceivably fit in a few other E1 maps, if sounds and maps end up being re-evaluated at some point, but I think it fits the intended map quite well. It's a tinkling, sleazy, semi-sombre little number with a fair bit of percussion spice - suitable for a Rainy Day.

EDIT: If possible, I'd like to ditch maps 18 and 20 in favour of 31 and 32... and have a crack at 07, heh. I am hoping that this doesn't stop other folks from having a go, though; these tracks are really attractive prospects, I think.

Doomhuntress: This MIDI is cool (if maybe a little excessive on the high-end stuff) but you might want to take up its use in this project with 40oz - I think he still very much wants to finish Mutiny. Should you get permission to use it in this instead, I think it'd fit MAP30 more, personally. Will keep it as unassigned for the time being, just to be on the safe side.

Alfonzo: Perfect. I enjoy how it remains subtle and non-intrusive aurally, but continues to surprise rhythmically. Keeps the whole thing continuously fresh. Percussive Organ needs as much love as possible, too, heh. Great stuff! Also, slots reassigned.

@Doomkid: Maybe it's because it's not my brand of music and this is a staple sort of technique, but I'd consider thinning most of the chords out to make it less grating on the ear, if only because the combined volume makes all the other tracks so damn quiet in comparison. Or, adding on an additional channel and splitting the chords between them to smooth out the mixing. I'm also not sold on there being 2 bass lines, also on the same channel.

A heavy kind of track like this does suit map06, though, so I like the idea of the it being where it is.

Doomkid: Gonna concur with Fonz. I might also suggest changing up the percussion line a bit, maybe varying it up a bit with some tom rolls here and there, and maybe changing up what the "slap" noise is doing, being a snare sound itself, it sounds a bit weird being there amongst the other snares.

A keyboard part would be nice as well, some string chords maybe to underpin the chord progression. Optional, of course - being a keyboard player I definitely would've put some stuff in there as a matter of principle. :P

@Jimmy he said i was allowed to use it in projects other than Mutiny. though, i agree with what you say, about putting it as unassigned for now, so maybe if no one does a map30 song it can be used. i've already claimed 3 slots here anyway, so i'm going to hold back a bit about submitting tracks.

I agree that the guitar sound is way to aggressive. I think I'm going to speed the tempo up a slight bit and perhaps replace one of the two guitars with something less angry, perhaps a harpsichord. Might also add some little sounds here and there, but I don't want to add too much - I like to keep it basic. Will post an updated version soon!

also, in case i forgot to mention it: Westopolis is an adaptation of the Westopolis theme from Shadow the Hedgehog, hence the name. ergo it's not an original composition of mine, per se. i dunno if it's necessary to have that info for the pack or not. Ancient Enclosure and Mint Petal are original compositions though.

Wow, TVR is one of my favorite wads and PMPP was a great experience for me. Damn, thank you, Jimmy, for not kicking me out of there. I think I'm actually capable of composing (I even have a MIDI keyboard now), so I'm definitely taking part.
I already have some ideas about my future track, so can I claim map 19?

Reach Within

This'll be MAP26's track, most likely. It's a weird frankenstein of about three different scrappy old MIDIs I salvaged from my folder. Turned into something very Klemmy as a result. Have yet to try it out in the map. Might still tweak the guitar solo at the end or make it more interesting.

Cool? :>

EDIT: Updated, fixed up solo and ending a tiny bit.

My MIDI sounded like it was taking itself far too seriously before. I've reduced the overly-aggressive sound of the guitars, switched some instruments in favor of more natural sounds, and added a dash of flare where it was lacking overall.

I'm happy to play catch with this midi, btw - If you can think of another segment worth adding to the song, I'd love to hear it.

Doomkid: That's indeed a lot better. :) Mix sounds good, and I enjoy the ebbing and flowing of the buildup of instruments. Not totally sold on the sleigh bells at the end there but I think I'm just nitpicking at that point.

By the by, is Wasted definitely the name? Or Wasted!. Or might you be naming it something else, heh.

I'd like to claim Map20. My track for 14 is coming along, but I've had some false starts with 28. I'm hoping to turn things around with that one soon - if not, I'll relinquish the slot.

Akse, done.

KevinHEZ: Hey, nice work! This isn't currently slated for use anywhere else? It's definitely a great track (long, too!), and would definitely be at home in the pack, so I'll go ahead and slot you in. Only thing I might change about it is the length of the middle section where it plays the same four notes repeatedly for a good while. Both sections either side of that middle bit are great music, though.

Sorry I have no musical abilities to contribute but I just wanna say that this is a really impressive turnout so far considering this project started 3 days ago! As much as I like stock Doom midis, I'd be interested in seeing other musicless classic megawads get this kind of attention too. :P
