One of the appearances made me go bananas, like when Chuck appeared in Expandables 2.

There were 2 character reveales that I had to look up after returning home from the cinema.

Spoiler

The first one was Chris Evens who played The Human Torch, however - Deadpool thought that he was someone else in the film. Since I haven't seen any of the other MCU movies - I didn't realize that he thought that he was actually Captain America (Chris Evens has played both parts).

The other character being Gambit from the Xmen. Turns out that the deal with him is that there was going to be a standalone movie with him, but it never saw the light of day. He has a line in the film that alludes to this fact. I of course originally didn't know this at first.

Five Nights at Freddy's (2023)

Watched it last year at the movies! As a fan of the franchise I think they did a great job for both making a good adaptation but also a good movie for people who haven't played the game due to how simple and self-contained FNaF 1's lore is, detached from the rest of the franchise's lore. Pretty good watch, would recommend!

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)

The only Studio Ghibli film i didn't watch was recently added on Netflix. I was advised to bring a napkin.

That advice was sound. This is a really dark war movie, set at the end of WOII. We will see war orphans Seita and Setsuko embark on a story where nothing you think is going to happen, is going to happen.

The anti-cure to depression. Shit, what a grim masterpiece.

I Saw the Devil

This is one I've seen before. I watched it close to when it came out and when I was 21 I thought this movie was one of the greatest films ever made. Rewatching it with a group that consisted mostly of women (I didn't choose the movie) was little eye opening because I forgot A) just how much SA content is in this film, and B) how much the film seems to be getting off to it at times. The women in this film are treated as props by not only the protagonist and antagonist - which I'm fine with as it fits the ethical dilemmas at the core of the film - but also by the director which is where the problems for me lie. Ultimately it's a product of its time and place, but it's interesting seeing not only how it's aged, but also just how oblivious I was to certain things when I was younger.

That said there's still a lot to like here. The fight/torture scenes are exceptionally well shot without becoming gratuitous, and the acting and cinematography throughout is phenomenal. The moral quandary at the core of the film works well, but it definitely doesn't hit as hard in 2024 as it did in 2010 - though the ending is still amazing. I have definitely seen better films in this genre since it came out, but I do still think it's worth a watch.
