This months interview is with Tarin, ACS master to rival Wildman and general all round good dude, whose F-Base special edition is reviewed this month. And he's got a nice new website too...
icarusweb: Nice new site design. Have you been doing that sort of thing long?

Tarin: Thank you :) I guess you ask this because of my old design which was quite simple ;) I'm doing HTML for approximately two and a half year, so my new site is not my second or third one.

icarusweb: And do you agree with my article "Killer Websites" that good website design corresponds to good WAD design?

Tarin: Yes and no. You can probably ever say that a well designed site always corresponds to a good WAD designer, but there are also crap sites with good designers (though I can't think of one right now). I can understand that DW only wants to host good looking sites, since (as said above) there is a better chance that they actually will finish something (and that this will also be high quality).

icarusweb: The ACS stuff WAD is inspiring... where did you learn to program like that? Where do you get ideas for new ACS tricks?

Tarin: I'm programming in C for a couple of years now, so I already knew everything I needed for ACS. I think the reason why we don't see more stuff like that is that most people think way to complicated about ACS in DooM. For instance, let's take the exploding crates. When you see it the first time you probably get blown away by the effect, since nobody did it before. But when you think about it and maybe look at the code what the "exploding" create really is and how it's achived: a floor lowers and some projectiles are spawned, that's all! People, don't think too complicated! :) Most of the ideas I get from other games I play. When I see some effect I think from time to time "hey, that is possible in DooM too!"

icarusweb: You also have quite a number of programs on your site for download, like bloodsplash and Tall Sky... what's your first love, mapping or programming?

Tarin: Hard to say. I like both equal.

icarusweb: If you had to give up one or the other, which would it be?

Tarin: I'd give up mapping. It's not because I'd like programming more, but I guess programming will have a better use for me in later life than mapping :)

icarusweb: How's DooM 3057 going? How much input are you having on it?

Tarin: Good question. I've now completed two DM levels for it, and they are looking and playing really good. I'm not sure how people coming along with their single player levels. X-Blade is quite buisy lately, and we've not had a team meeting for some time. And we got a new texture wad. Fredrik Johansson is doing a real great job on them!

icarusweb: What was the inspiration for the FBase series?

Tarin: Hmmm... I got the idea for the first FBase level from some brick and metal single player level, but I can't remember which one. I basically though "hey, that looks cool, let's make a DM level in this style". I then started with one room I had in mind, and saw what comes next (this is BTW how I design all my levels). I designed FBase2 after playing one of the Q3A tourney levels (the one with the fog). FBase3 I don't really know. I got the idea for FBase4 from a DM level in the Blood2 and is somewhat similar to this level.

icarusweb: How long are you planning to be an active member of the community? Many prominant members have dropped out within the last year.

Tarin: I'll stay as long as possible in the community. Though it's sad to see that well known people are leaving the community it's good to see that we always get new members.

icarusweb: Any future palns or un-DooMy stuff we should know about?

Tarin: I've started to work on some multi player modification for Skull Tag. I hope it will show some of ST's real power. That's all I can think of now.

icarusweb: Should we free Hissy?

Tarin: Absolutely.
