Review: F - Base Special Edition

Tarin, the only person to challenge Rick Clark’s ZDooM has been working on this set of levels for quite some time now. F-Base special edition (it stands for forgotten base, in case you were wondering) collects the first four levels together in a little DM level set.

So what’s it all about? Well, to be honest, there’s not much of a theme. There’s no title screen. There no real story. What there are, however, are four fine deathmatching levels, each with a separate theme. We’ve got the fairly standard but nicely done brick ‘n metal theme, which inspired the whole shebang, a misty level, a lava-y level, and most interestingly a level on top of a building.

It’s the roof top level, F-Base 4, that inspires the most interest from this collection. It’s so well done, that you have to wonder why no ones included the idea in a wad before – correct me if Im wrong, but Ive never even seen anything similar.

It’s necessary to play these features with ZDooM, but ironically, the ZDooM features themselves are minimal. In the rooftop level (again!) they really come into play, and make diving off the roof a very bad idea. All in all, this is fun and diverting stuff that’s great for procrastinating from homework for another hour or two.
