Review: Spice ZDooM

Please note this is not a finished product, and so this review is based on an in-progress alpha. But what an alpha it is. This mod – an exe modification of ZdooM, as opposed to a wad of any kind – is probably the best thing to happen to deathmatches since Gothic DM. No, really – it’s that good.

If you haven’t heard of it yet, the basic deal is this – you can now play DooM, or more specifically ZdooM, as one of the original monsters. This goes way beyond skinning – you now have the monsters abilities. For example, if you’re the shotgun guy, you start with a shotgun. If you’re the revenant, you shoot homing missles. If you’re the cacodemon, you can fly - how cool is that?

If you think this makes a match between a cyber demon and a former human a little unbalanced, you’d be wrong – the cyberdemon is tougher, but he can’t pick up any weapons, only fire and collect missiles. Also he’s very tall and has a tendency to get stuck, something the hypothetical former human could take advantage of.

The progress on this mod is also moving very fast – unlike the majority (including mine – sorry) of DooM projects at the minute. Since I downloaded it last week, it’s added lots of new features and upgraded through two more versions. This is the kind of motivation we need in the community.

There are, of course, bugs – but it’s only an alpha, so we can let it go. For example, on the creature selection screen (which is this week’s POTW), some of the larger monsters don’t fit into the creature select box. However, none of the problems are anything worth shouting about, especially as this program is expanding so quickly – some of the bugs I was going to write about have already been fixed since I downloaded it. Now that’s service.

In short, this is bloody fantastic, pure and simple and truly ground-breaking. I can’t wait for it to be finished.
