Deathmatch Incarnate 2

  • fUnKyMoNk has made some great contributions to the Doom community during the past years. He's a well known level designer as well as a wad reviewer at Tha Doomshack. His previous works include some fine levels on TeamTNT's Reclamation and I knew I was up to something good when I loaded up Deathmatch Incarnate 2 for a first look.

    Deathmatch Incarnate 2 is pretty detailed and it is clear that this is the work of an experienced designer. As you can see from the images the architecture is very nice. The lighting is pretty simple, but since this is an outdoor level it doesn't matter much seeing how most of the level is exposed to broad daylight.

    Wanna go for a swim? You can't do that I'm afraid... This is a pretty good overview of the level. Notice the pools of blood in every corner

    Deathmatch Incarnate uses textures from both IK texture pack for Doom 2 by Derek Mac Donald and NIGHTMARE texture wad 1 by Nick Baker. These textures make the map look different from most other dm maps. It is some kind of a military base courtyard with flowing pools of blood and a vivid red sky. The wad gives a trippy impression with all the pulsating lights and the texture choices in some parts as opposed to an otherwise gloomy atmosphere - this makes dmincar2 feel very interesting. Now if we could just get some music that fits in the theme and it would be perfect. Any suggestions?

    Time to give someone a ride! The rocket launcher can easily be grabbed from one side of the courtyard.

    The weapon placement is good, but with at least 4 players you may run out of weapons sometimes if playing with altdeath. You'll usually be able to get your hand on at least a regular shotgun. The rocket launcher is the only projectile weapon included and a little too easy to get in regular deathmatch I think.

    Ouch! Thank god there's that teleport. Here you can see the only place in the level that has lava. It can be accessed from the main courtyard.

    Most of your frags will be done with super shotguns on this level. The weapon count breaks down into the following; two shotguns, two super shotguns, a chaingun and a rocket launcher (Let me know if I missed anything). There are no medikits or stimpacks, so you'll have to manage with that 100 health you get when you respawn. That gives you an opportunity to frag someone with a single direct hit from the SSG unlike other deathmatch maps. I like that :P

    Although Deathmatch Incarnate 2 has some minor flaws it is a great deathmatch level. If you're into fast and furious deathmatch play then this is the level to go for. It offers intense fragging for even a two player deathmatch which makes it particularly suitable for internet play too.
