Boom
Boom is a very popular port, created and championed by the renowned TeamTNT.
Primarily an MS-DOS port, Boom's claim to fame rested on two basic changes to the original engine:
First, all previous engine limits had been removed, allowing wad authors to place an unprecedented
level of detail in their maps. Second, it added many extended linedefs, giving Doom new features
such as conveyer belts, deep water, multiple action switches, and many others. It's also been
ported to the Windows environment as PRBOOM, and has also been the base for ports such as
Marine's Best Friend (MBF) and Smack My Marine Up (SMMU). TeamTNT has lately made Zdoom the
official successor to Boom, but the latter still holds value for purists in that it doesn't
support freelook or jumping.

If you're not familiar with these guys, this is the same group that produced Final Doom for id
software, and also spearheaded some major Doom projects in the past. If you're aching for some new
deathmatch wads to play on, look no further than this site. It's also the first place you should visit
if you need more information on how to create maps that will take advantage of Boom-specific features.
PRBoom: If you've got something against
DOS but happen to be a Doom purist at the same time (??), you can now get this Win32 port of the
standard DOS Boom version 2.02. Other than being compatible with incarnations of Windows 95/98,
it's completely identical to the original in functionality.
Marine's Best Friend (MBF):
MBF is Lee Killough's swan song to the Doom community. It sports full Boom functionality, but adds some neat
extras such as high color modes, Doom beta support, and helper AI.
Smack My Marine Up (SMMU): Yet another "Son of Boom," SMMU actually
manages to hold its own with regards to features and functionality. It was the first Doom source port
to support texture warping a la Quake, and offers features such as light-up crosshairs and the
upcoming scripting language FraggleScript.
